Rev. Dr. Conrad L. Kanagy addresses the question “Why is God Taking Apart the Church?” reflecting upon this question through the lens of his own body’s dismantling
Professor, Pastor and Podcaster Dr. Conrad L. Kanagy has begun releasing four books in a series entitled “A Church Dismantled.” What began in the early months of the covid pandemic as a podcast to address the cry to “re-open” the church has emerged as four books centered around the question of “Why is God Taking Apart the Church?”
Kanagy addresses this question through the lens of his own experience with Parkinson’s Disease and his belief that in all of the dismantlings of our lives, the church, and the world, God is at work to bring in the new heaven and new earth, and that everything else is a footnote to this grand project of which Isaiah describes in chapter 40, where mountains are removed, valleys raised, rough places made smooth, and crooked places straight.
Walter Brueggemann says of Kanagy’s work: “I would label the writing style of this book as “breezy.” Conrad Kanagy is able to say things and cross many boundaries not possible in a more somber mood.”
Donald Kraybill, author of the Upside Down Kingdom, heralds the first book by noting: “Love is the bright marque message in Kanagy’s essays. These essays mix the voice of a prophet, the eye of a sociologist, the heart of a pastor, the wisdom of an educator, and above all the candid confessions of a child of God.”
Readers consistently use the words authentic, vulnerable, honest, prophetic, and hope to describe Kanagy’s work. The four books to be released this Fall are entitled:
- A Church Dismantled–A Kingdom Restored: Why is God Taking Apart the Church?
- Ministry in A Church Dismantled: To Tear Down or Build Up?
- In A Church Dismantled the Light Still Shines: Reflections for Sacred Time
- In A Church Dismantled–One Pilgrim’s Journey: Finding My Way Home in the Dark
