Mental health expert testifies Jay man on trial for murder has schizophrenia – WABI Express News
FARMINGTON, Maine (WABI) A highly-awaited testimony took place Friday in the murder trial of James Sweeney, the man from Jay charged with murdering his girlfriend.
A witness for the defense testified he diagnosed Sweeney with schizophrenia.
Sweeney is accused of killing Wendy Douglas, 51.
He claimed he’s not criminally responsible.
On the stand Friday, Dr. Robert Pollard, one of the foremost experts on mental health of deaf people, said he diagnosed Sweeney with schizophrenia.
He said Sweeney has delusions and hallucinates.
Pollard also said Sweeney told him the sounds in his head told him to assault Douglas.
A state-contracted clinical neuropsychologist disagreed with the diagnosis of schizophrenia.
He said it’s more likely an anxiety disorder such as PTSD.
Closing arguments will be heard Monday.
